Peugeot's worldwide sales increased by 16.7% in the first half of 2010 to reach 1,093,000 units, ahead of the global market growth of 13%. The manufacturer gained two market places in Europe, from 6th to 4th place in the rank of vehicle manufacturers. Outside Europe, Peugeot continued its success with a sales growth of 42% (459,000 compared to 389,000 for the 1st half-year 2009). The increase in sales is the best half-year performance ever recorded in Peugeot's 200-year history.
On 8 January, Peugeot unveiled a new brand project with three clear objectives: to move from tenth to seventh place in the World market by 2015 by launching 14 new models between 2010 - 2012, to establish the Peugeot brand as the benchmark for style and to reinforce its position as the only manufacturer to offer a full range of transport solutions - bicycles, scooters, passenger cars and light commercial vehicles. The latest sales figures are testament to the success of Peugeot's renaissance programme.
The boost in sales is largely due to the success in Europe of the 3008 (65,000 units), 5008 (40,000 units) and new Peugeot RCZ sports coupe (5,000 sales since late May). All three models are new markets for Peugeot that have earned the company conquest sales. Targets set for 3008 and 5008 7-Seater MPV have been exceeded by 25% and 10% respectively, while RCZ sales have surpassed all expectations by a massive 50%. Further afield, in China, the 408 has proven popular with 17,000 sales since April.
Thanks to this excellent performance, Peugeot has earned its 1st place as the leading French motor manufacturer in the world with a global market share of 3.4%.
In Ireland, Peugeot registrations have increased by 51.8%, to a 3.8% passenger cars and LCV market share, up to the end of June. The strong growth here is reflective of the successful launch of the 3008 in Ireland, Continental Irish Car of the Year 2010, the arrival of the new 5008 7-Seater MPV and a strong scrappage campaign across the Peugeot range.
The performance from Peugeot is set to continue in the second half of the year as the manufacturer prepares for the launch of the 408 in Latin America, the launch of the all-electric iOn in September and the unveiling of the new 508 range and 3008 diesel hybrid at October's Paris Motor Show.
